He moved his head from side to side and in his eyes I could see that he felt so sorry for me. Right then, I knew this was the end with Xavier.

Was he kidding me? Did he think that I’d made all of this up before?

He stood still, as if he was waiting for me to say more and when I didn’t, he pressed his lips against my cheek with a kiss that told me I was right. Whatever we had between us was over. Then, he turned and walked away.

I was glad that he was gone. There really wasn’t room for him in my life.

So, if that’s how I really felt, then why did I feel so empty and alone as I watched him walk away?
